The Brad Blog: Chinese Cyber Attacks on U.S. Targets Said to Mirror U.S. Chamber of Commerce Cyber Plot Targeting Progressives

-By Brad Friedman

March 5, 2013- So what does the Chinese Government and the Rightwing mega-lobbying group calling itself the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have in common? Apparently, they are both interested in hacking into the computer networks of their perceived political opponents and appear to be using very similar techniques and tools to do so, as The Nation's Lee Fang reported on Monday.

A computer security expert cited by Fang notes "lots of overlap" between the recent documented Chinese military cyber hacks and tactics proposed for use by federal contractors working with the U.S. Chamber and their attorneys to discredit their enemies.

UPDATED: Super-genius Barr responds, shoots self again...

October 24, 2011- Apparently, disgraced former HBGary Federal CEO Aaron Barr just can't help himself.

The guy who lost his job and was publicly humiliated after promising to reveal the identities of the supposed leadership of hacktivist group Anonymous and getting caught devising a plan to illegally discredit, defraud and spy on perceived opponents of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Bank of America is now palling around with a self-appointed NYPD/FBI "snitch" at the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations and beyond, according to --- ironically enough --- emails accidentally released on the Internet by the "snitch" himself, Thomas Ryan.

Hacked emails from security contractor HBGary Federal reveal a disturbing public-private partnership to spy on web users

June 22, 2011- When President Eisenhower left office in 1960, he provided the American people with a warning.

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist."

Sixty years later, the military-industrial complex has been joined by another unprecedented centre of what has increasingly proven to be "misplaced power": the dozens of secretive firms known collectively as the intelligence contracting industry.

Protect Our Elections Asks FBI To Expand Its Investigation Of NewsCorp To Include Its Relationship With US Chamber Of Commerce

On August 14, 2011, Protect Our Elections attorney Kevin Zeese wrote a letter to the FBI asking that it expand its investigation of NewsCorp to include (1) its million dollar donation to the US Chamber of Commerce to gut the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act in order to cover up, obstruct and undermine an investigation under the FCPA, and (2) a conspiracy with the Chamber to use private investigators, military intelligence contractors, and law firms to spy on Americans and organizations that they consider threats, either on political, financial or ideological grounds.

Think Progress: Revealed: Fake Facebook Identity Used By Military Contractors Plotting To Hack Progressive Organizations

-By Lee Fang

August 18, 2011- Earlier this year, ThinkProgress obtained 75,000 private emails from the defense contractor HBGary Federal via the hacktivist group called Anonymous. The emails led to two shocking revelations. First, that an assortment of private military firms collectively called “Team Themis” had been tapped by Bank of America to conduct a cyber war against reporters sympathetically covering the Wikileaks revelations. And second, that late in 2010, the same set of firms began work separately for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a Republican-aligned corporate lobbying group, to develop a similar campaign of sabotage against progressive organizations, including the SEIU and ThinkProgress .

American Law.Com: Hunton Downsizes London Office Following Partner Exodus

-By Chris Johnson

July 14, 2011- Hunton & Williams has downsized its London office after a series of partner departures dragged attorney headcount in the office down 60 percent in less than three months, reports U.K. publication Legal Week.

A total of nine staff positions -- consisting of one of counsel, two associates and six support staff -- have been eliminated in an attempt to refocus the practice after the loss of five energy and corporate partners to rival U.S. firms. Hunton had 36 lawyers in London as of April 1; it numbers just 14 today.

According to London managing partner Bridget Treacy, the redundancies are a "natural consequence" of the recent partner losses, as Legal Week reported.

The remaining seven-partner business will now focus primarily on data protection and finance as a result of the strategic realignment, after the transactional corporate and energy practices -- historically among the firm's core offerings in London -- were left with just one partner each.
